In this chapter, we provide an insight into what we have learned about highly successful elite sport coaches and how this understanding might inform coach recruitment and development. This would be better than common streets of constant visual monotony or, by contrast, a townscape of random, unrelated and visually contrasting projects where the quality of the space between the buildings is actually an afterthought. To enhance our understanding of the practices of successful people, a more comprehensive and nuanced examination of what underpins their successes is imperative that is, why they behave the way they do. But the concept of serial vision might encourage a designer to get down into the streets and other public spaces that they are designing and try and compose together some of the various elements discussed above in order to build a set of contrasting, but Figure 8.50 Serial visionĪlso complementary, places. The emphasis is most firmly on the qualities of the space created between the buildings, and the contribution to that space that individual buildings or other elements of the landscape might make (Figure 8.50).Įveryone experiences the urban environment in different ways and from very different perspectives. Serial vision, by contrast, would consider the role that many individual buildings play in the constantly changing view of a town as we pass through it. For example, architects often photograph their buildings as if they are the main focal point of attention and only experienced as static objects located firmly in space. The concept is a little like comparing a photograph to a film. It reminds us that we should consider the environment as a series of places and emerging views, and reflect a little on how the environment will be experienced by its users who rarely stand still. An awareness of these changing views is what Cullen (1961) termed 'serial vision'. Although we experience some aspects of townscape when we stand still within a street or square, the richness of the environment isn't really revealed to us until we are on the move, and we can more fully experience the changing views that an urban area has to offer.
